At the Wilco Omega Scholarship Foundation, we’re not just here to offer funding. We’re here to guide you through the bigger picture. If you’re a rising senior, here’s how to start your
scholarship search the smart way.
Start Close to Home
Local scholarships are often the most accessible. They tend to have fewer applicants, meaning higher odds for students like you. Start with your high school, community organizations, churches, and of course, WOSF.
Expand to National Programs
Look into well-known scholarship programs that support minority students and students from underserved communities, such as:
● The Ron Brown Scholar Program
● Dell Scholars
● The Jackie Robinson Foundation
● United Negro College Fund (UNCF)
● Thurgood Marshall College Fund
These programs often offer more than just funding. They provide mentorship, leadership
development, and a strong support network.
Use Scholarship Platforms
Websites like Bold.org, Fastweb, Going Merry, and BigFuture let you search for scholarships
based on your interests, background, and goals.
Get Your Materials Ready
Most scholarships require similar materials. Prepare these now so you’re ready when
applications open:
● A clear and professional resume
● A few strong essays that reflect your goals and values
● Letters of recommendation from trusted mentors or teachers
● A list of your extracurriculars, leadership roles, and achievements
Tips for Success
● Apply early and often
● Stay organized with a calendar or spreadsheet
● Customize your essays to fit each scholarship’s mission
● Ask someone to proofread your applications
● Keep going, even if you don’t win the first few
We hope this checklist gives you a strong starting point as you prepare for your senior year. If you have any questions about scholarships or the college planning process, please don’t
hesitate to reach out to the Wilco Omega Scholarship Foundation. We’re here to support you.
