7 Ways to Prep for College This Summer

At the Wilco Omega Scholarship Foundation, we know that the path to higher education starts with preparation. Summer is a valuable window of time for rising seniors to get ahead, reduce stress, and build confidence for the year ahead. Here are seven steps you can take right now to get on track.

1. Finalize Your College List

Take time this summer to research schools that match your goals and values. Consider

programs, campus culture, support resources, and affordability. Create a balanced list that

includes reach, match, and safety schools. Your future deserves thoughtful planning.

2. Prepare for the SAT or ACT

If you plan to take the SAT or ACT, use free tools like Khan Academy to study or consider

signing up for a prep class. Many schools are now test-optional, but if you’re submitting scores, be sure to review each school’s policy.

3. Start Your Personal Statement

Your college essay is a chance to tell your story. What motivates you? What challenges have

you overcome? What dreams are you chasing? Start drafting now so you have time to reflect, revise, and get feedback.

4. Request Recommendation Letters Early

Reach out to teachers, coaches, or mentors now so they have time to write thoughtful letters. Share your goals and resume to help them write something personal and specific.

5. Gain Real-World Experience

Whether you volunteer, work a summer job, or participate in a leadership program, any

experience that helps you grow is valuable. It shows colleges and scholarship committees your work ethic, initiative, and commitment.

6. Research Scholarships

Start looking for scholarships now, including local opportunities like the Wilco Omega

Scholarship. Organize a list of deadlines, requirements, and materials you’ll need. This step

alone can save you thousands of dollars in the long run.

7. Visit College Campuses

If possible, tour a few campuses to get a feel for the environment. If travel isn’t an option, many schools offer virtual tours and online info sessions.
